Evaluating an Open Access Journal Before Submitting

Open access widens readership, yet quality still varies between titles. This short checklist helps authors compare options calmly and protect their work and reputation.

  • Look for named, reachable editors. A credible journal lists real editors with institutional affiliations and a working contact route. Search their names independently to confirm that they exist and work in the field.
  • Understand the licence you grant. Open access normally means readers may reuse your paper under stated terms. Read the licence carefully and decide whether it suits your funder's and institution's requirements.
  • Study the review description. Check whether the process describes screening, reviewer selection and decision categories. Vague statements about speed without any mention of evaluation deserve extra caution.
  • Keep your own copy of everything. Store the submitted version, review correspondence and final proof yourself. You may need them for promotion files, funder reports or later corrections.
  • Compare more than one venue. Shortlist several journals and compare scope, readership and policies side by side. A calm comparison usually beats a rushed choice made near a deadline.

Open access suits your research only when the journal's editors, process and licence are all clear before you submit.
