The Platform

iThenticate is Turnitin’s Tool for Research Papers

Turnitin Best for students
iThenticate by Turnitin Best for researchers

Turnitin and iThenticate are made by the same company, and the difference is not quality — it is who each one is built for. Turnitin is the service most universities run for coursework and student submissions. iThenticate is Turnitin’s professional product for research: it searches subscription publisher content from Crossref, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley and others that the student edition does not reach, and it produces the report format that journal editorial systems expect.

There is a second, practical difference that catches authors out. A Turnitin class submission is normally stored in the student repository. Check your own manuscript that way and a later submission of the same paper can match against your earlier copy — your own work reported as plagiarism. iThenticate does not add documents to that repository, which is why researchers are told to use it for anything headed to a journal.

How It Works

What Happens to Your Paper During a Similarity Check

How an iThenticate similarity check works Your paper is compared against open web pages, journal and Crossref publisher content, and previously submitted works, and a similarity report comes back, with AI writing detection on request. 10,000 Pages Institutional volume 2,500,000 Words ₹44,000 ₹4.40 / page

Bands are calculated at roughly 250 words per page, so a 25,000-word paper sits in the 100-page band regardless of its margins or font size. Pick the band at or above your document’s length. Not sure which applies? Send the file to jwbook.org/similarity-check and it will be confirmed before anything is charged.

Step by Step

How to Check Your Paper for Plagiarism

1. Prepare the document

Export as Word (.docx) or PDF with the text selectable — a scanned image of a page has no text for the software to compare. Keep the references in; they are excluded from the score afterwards rather than deleted beforehand.

2. Submit the request

Open jwbook.org/similarity-check, attach the file and choose the page band. You will get an acknowledgement with a reference number.

3. iThenticate runs the comparison

The document is compared against internet sources, published journal content from Crossref and the major publishers, and previously submitted work. If you asked for it, AI writing detection runs on the same file.

4. Read the report, not just the number

The PDF gives an overall similarity index and a source-by-source breakdown. The breakdown is the part that matters — see the section below on why a single percentage decides nothing.

5. Revise and recheck

Rewrite the flagged passages in your own words, cite properly, then request a recheck to confirm the score before you submit to a journal or university.

Understanding It

What Plagiarism Actually Means in Academic Work

Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s words, ideas, data, figures or structure as though they were your own. It does not require intent. A missed citation, a paragraph pasted into a draft and never rewritten, a figure reused without permission — each is treated as plagiarism by a journal even when the author never meant to deceive anyone.

That is why a similarity check is a drafting tool, not a judgement. Running it before submission tells you what an editor is going to see, while you still have time to fix it. Running it after a rejection tells you why the rejection happened.

Direct copyingText taken word for word without quotation marks or a citation. The easiest kind to detect and the hardest to explain away.
Mosaic / patchworkSentences stitched together from several sources with a few words changed. Detected because the sentence structure survives the rewriting.
Self-plagiarismReusing your own previously published text without citing it. Journals treat this as a publishing-ethics breach, not a harmless shortcut.
Improper paraphrasingRewording a source sentence by sentence while keeping its argument and order, without attribution.
Missing attributionThe idea is credited in one place but the surrounding text reads as original, so the boundary of the borrowed material is unclear.
Figures, tables and dataReproducing a figure, table or dataset without permission and a source line. Similarity software does not catch these — a reviewer does.
Reading the Report

The Percentage Is Not the Answer

Anatomy of a similarity report An illustrative report: overall similarity index 14 percent, made of internet sources 6 percent, journal articles 4 percent, student papers 3 percent and publications 1 percent. Similarity Report — sample 14% Overall index Internet sources6% Journal articles4% Student papers3% Publications1% Read the sources, not just the total

The similarity index is the share of your text that matches something else. It is a starting point, not a verdict. A 5% score can be plagiarism if it is one continuous copied paragraph. A 25% score can be perfectly acceptable if it is made of properly quoted material, standard method descriptions and the reference list. What an editor reads is the source-by-source breakdown, and so should you.

Use the bands below as orientation, then check the requirement of the specific journal or university you are submitting to — the threshold belongs to them, not to the software.

0–10%Generally comfortableUsual range for original work with a normal reference list. Still worth scanning the breakdown for one large single-source match.
10–20%Review the breakdownCommon and often fine, but check that no single source dominates. Most UGC CARE journals expect below 15%.
Above 20%Revise before submittingLikely to be returned by an editorial office. Rewrite the flagged passages and recheck.
Any %One source over ~5%A single source contributing a large block matters more than the total. This is the pattern editors look for.
UGC Rules for India

UGC Plagiarism Levels and Penalties (2018 Regulations)

The UGC (Promotion of Academic Integrity and Prevention of Plagiarism in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2018 grade similarity into four levels.

UGC similarity levels: Level 0 up to 10 percent, Level 1 10 to 40 percent, Level 2 40 to 60 percent, Level 3 above 60 percent Level 0Level 1 Level 2Level 3 0%10%40%60%100%
LevelSimilarityStudent work (thesis / dissertation)Faculty & researchers (papers)
Level 0Up to 10%Minor similarity — no penalty.Minor similarity — no penalty.
Level 1Above 10% to 40%Revised script to be submitted within a stipulated time, not more than six months.Asked to withdraw the manuscript.
Level 2Above 40% to 60%Debarred from submitting a revised script for one year.Withdraw the manuscript, denied one annual increment, and not allowed to supervise new students for two years.
Level 3Above 60%Registration for the programme cancelled.Withdraw the manuscript, denied two successive annual increments, and not allowed to supervise new students for three years.

The same regulations list what is excluded from the similarity calculation, so a fair check removes these before the percentage is read:

  • Quoted work with permission and/or attribution
  • References & bibliography
  • Table of contents
  • Preface & acknowledgements
  • Generic terms & laws
  • Standard symbols & equations
Practical

How to Reduce Similarity Honestly

The aim is a paper that is genuinely yours, not a lower number. Text spinners and synonym-swapping tools lower the score while making the writing worse, and reviewers notice unnatural phrasing immediately — several journals now treat it as a form of misconduct in itself.

  • Read, close, then write. Take notes from a source, put it away, and write the passage from your notes. What comes out will be your sentence structure rather than a rearrangement of theirs.
  • Quote deliberately. If the original wording matters, quote it properly and cite it. A correctly marked quotation is not misconduct, even though it raises the percentage.
  • Cite while you draft, not afterwards. Most accidental plagiarism is a citation that was meant to be added later and never was.
  • Do not fight the method section. Standard procedures and instrument names legitimately match other papers. Describe your own parameters and let the overlap stand.
  • Cite yourself. Reusing your own earlier text is still reuse. Cite the earlier work as you would anyone else’s.
  • Recheck after revising. Confirm the change worked before you submit, rather than hoping.
Google Plagiarism Checker

Can You Check Plagiarism with Google?

Google has no standalone public plagiarism checker, but four Google tools help — and each has a limit worth knowing before you rely on it.

Google Search “exact phrase”

Put a sentence in quotation marks — “like this” — and Google returns pages with that exact wording. Good for checking one passage you are unsure about.

  • Limit: open web only; cannot see paywalled journal articles.

Google Classroom originality reports

For institutions on Google Workspace for Education. Teachers and students run originality reports on assignments, which flag text matching web pages.

  • Limit: only inside Classroom; limited reports per class in the free edition.

Google Docs add-ons

The Google Workspace Marketplace lists third-party checker add-ons that run inside Docs. They are separate services with their own pricing and privacy terms.

  • Limit: read the add-on’s data policy before uploading unpublished work.

Google Scholar

Not a checker, but the best way to find the original source of a flagged sentence and cite it correctly — and to confirm your idea has not already been published.

  • Limit: finds sources; does not calculate similarity.
Why journals do not accept a Google check. Much of the scholarly literature sits behind publisher paywalls that Google Search cannot read in full, and a search result is not a report. Editors and universities ask for a Turnitin or iThenticate report because it covers that content and lists every matched source.

Questions

Plagiarism Check — Frequently Asked Questions

Is iThenticate the same as Turnitin?

They are two products from the same company. Turnitin is the student-facing service most universities use for coursework; iThenticate is the professional tool for researchers, journals and publishers. iThenticate searches subscription publisher content that the student version does not cover, which is why journals and editorial systems ask for it.

What similarity percentage is acceptable?

There is no universal number. Most UGC CARE Approved journals, including JMVRA, look for below 15%. Scopus standard and international journals commonly accept up to 20%. PhD theses are usually required to be below 10% excluding references. Always check the specific requirement of the journal or university you are submitting to — the threshold belongs to them, not to the software.

Does a low percentage mean my paper is safe?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. A 5% score made up of one continuous copied paragraph is plagiarism; a 25% score made entirely of correctly cited quotations, standard method descriptions and a reference list is usually fine. The source breakdown is what an editor reads, not the headline figure.

Will submitting my paper for a check put it in a database?

No. iThenticate does not add documents to the student repository the way a Turnitin class submission does, so checking a manuscript before publication does not cause it to be flagged as a match against itself later. This is one of the practical reasons researchers are told to use iThenticate rather than a student account.

Do you detect AI-generated content?

Yes, on request. Mention it in your request and AI writing detection flags content likely generated by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar models. Treat it as an indicator to review rather than a verdict — the detector reports a likelihood, and the responsibility for what is in the paper stays with the author.

How are pages counted for pricing?

By the page bands shown on this page, calculated on roughly 250 words per page. A 25,000-word paper falls in the 100-page band whatever its formatting, so changing margins or font size does not move it between bands.

Can I check the same paper more than once?

Yes. Rechecking after revision is the normal way to use the report — you fix the passages the breakdown flagged and confirm the score before submission.

Is a plagiarism check included if I publish with JMVRA?

Yes. Screening is part of the JMVRA publication process and included in the publication fee. This service is for authors who need an independent report for an external journal, a university submission, a thesis or a book manuscript.

What file formats can I send?

Word (.docx) and PDF are the reliable choices. LaTeX should be exported to PDF first. A scanned or photographed document cannot be checked, because there is no machine-readable text to compare.

How long does it take?

Standard turnaround is 1 to 2 working days. Large documents in the 5,000 and 10,000 page bands take longer; the acknowledgement email confirms the expected date.

Does Google have a plagiarism checker?

Not a standalone one for the public. Google Classroom offers originality reports to schools and colleges on Google Workspace for Education, and anyone can search an exact sentence in quotation marks on Google to find copies on the open web. Neither reaches subscription journal content, which is why journals and universities ask for a Turnitin or iThenticate report instead.

Is there a free Turnitin plagiarism checker?

Turnitin does not sell to individuals or offer a free public checker — it is licensed to institutions. Students get it through their university; authors who need an iThenticate by Turnitin report for a journal, thesis or book can request one here from ₹500 for 25 pages.

Which is the best free plagiarism checker for a research paper?

Free checkers such as Grammarly’s free check, Quetext, Duplichecker and SmallSEOTools compare text against the open web only, usually with a word limit per search. They are useful for a first pass on a draft. For a paper headed to a journal or a thesis headed to a university, use the tool the institution expects — normally iThenticate or Turnitin, or DrillBit through ShodhShuddhi at Indian universities.

Which plagiarism software do Indian universities use?

Many Indian universities use DrillBit, supplied free to member institutions by INFLIBNET’s ShodhShuddhi programme since October 2023, alongside Turnitin and iThenticate. Your library or research cell can tell you which tool and threshold your university applies.

Pre-check checklist

Before you send a document for checking

Six checks that make the report cheaper to act on.

  • The file is Word (.docx) or a text-based PDF — a scanned image has no text to compare
  • References are left in; the report lets the reader exclude them
  • Quotations are marked as quotations and carry a citation
  • Your own earlier publications are cited where you reuse them
  • The page count is known, so you can pick the right band (about 250 words a page)
  • You have the journal’s or university’s own threshold to hand — the software does not decide it
